What is SEO? - Search Engine Optimization explained

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art of improving the visibility of a website or a webpage in the search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic") search results.
Basically, the higher a website or webpage ranks in the search engine results page (SERPS), and more frequently a site appears in the search results, the more traffic the website will receive from the search engines. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and news search.
As an SEO strategy, search engine optimizers consider how search engines (algorithms) work, what people search for, how people search and the search terms typed into search engines. This is done through keyword research using SEO tools and studying other sources and statistics available.
Optimizing a website may involve editing its page content, HTML and other aspects of the website's code to increase its relevance to specific keywords and/or keyword phrases to make the website conform to the algorithms of the targeted search engines.
Website promotion is promoting a website to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, another SEO tactic used to help improve the website's visibility in the search engines.
This could include social bookmarking, exchanging links with relevant websites, listing the website in relevant directories and creating discussions in relevant forums, blogs, article directories and online press releases.
